We love to travel and like finding unusual places when we do. Heck, we like finding new and unusual places in our own backyard. Earlier today I got an email from Foursquare (yes, people still use that) promoting bars with unique names, places like Fat Angel Food & Library and The Smog Cutter. There were 30 restaurants/bars listed, and most I had never heard of, like The Fainting Goat in Washington, D.C. I mean, who wouldn’t want to grab a drink at The Fainting Goat? But there were a couple of places I had been including Atomic Liquors in Las Vegas, Nevada and the Billy Goat Tavern in Chicago, Illinois.
Funny story about the Billy Goat Tavern… I’ve been there several times, but I’ve never ordered anything. Every time we go I forget they are cash only. I never carry cash, so we take a few photos and leave. We are going to Chicago this weekend… Maybe I will remember to take cash out of the ATM before we go to the Billy Goat Tavern.
This list was fun to look at and I want to visit some of these places. There is one in Tucson, Arizona called Surly Wench Pub. That place looks awesome. It is a dive bar, which means live music, stiff drinks and a terrible beer list. But you don’t go to a place called the Surly Wench Pub for a good beer list.
Glad to see Atomic Liquors made the list. Atomic Liquors is one of the best, if not the best dive bar in Las Vegas. It’s small, cheap, and has a great happy hour. We haven’t been to Vegas in a few months, but when we go, we usually end up at Atomic Liquors at some point during our trip. Here are some of the others that I want to visit.
- Bar of the Gods, Portland, OR
- Jumbo’s Clown Room, Los Angeles, CA
- The Pastry War, Preston, TX
- Hard Times & Misery Saloon, Galveston, TX
- Tipsy Cow, Madison, WI
- Otto’s Shrunken Head, New York, NY
- The Monkey Farm Cafe, Old Saybrook, CT
The list goes on and on. There are a lot of local dive bars that we like, too. Places like Larry’s Cocktails and Coach House. Larry’s is cash only, but there is a Chase ATM close. This place is cheap and the drinks are stiff, too, ensuring that patrons have a memorable experience. Coach House is cool. It’s small, but a really cool vibe. It is in a good location, located in Old Town Scottsdale.
What are some of your favorite dive bars and restaurants? Like I said, we are headed to Chicago this weekend… Maybe we will discover another couple dive bars along the way. We are going to drink 19 cans of Old Style in 19 different neighborhoods, so chances are we will be visiting a few dive bars. I’ll drink to that. Cheers!
It is clear that the author is a data geek. I enjoy how he writes and writes
facts. It is always such a pleasure to read posts created
by actual professionals. I am fed up with that no-name,
ghostwritten articles. That is the reason it was
so nice to look at a persuasive piece. I see the writer has ground
knowledge it the topic in addition to some practical experience.
This kind of info is always more precious than copypasted blog articles ideas.
