Artist Interview: 1-on-1 with Christa Deánā

Christa Deánā is a Christian singer/songwriter from Philadelphia. She is also the co-owner for ChristaCourt Productions and has the voice of an angel. She has an awesome story, and I am glad I found her. Christa is focused on spreading the word and promoting her new single, “If God Doesn’t Want it.” I have to thank Michael Stover for introducing me to her. It seems that every artist MTS Management works with is the perfect fit for this blog. It is my pleasure to introduce you to Christa Deánā.

How do you pronounce your last name?
My last name is actually Young. That’s my married name. The easiest way to explain my middle name, “Deánā,” is to briefly discuss where it came from. My grandfather and my father are both Dean. Once I was born a girl they added an “a” on their names and made it, “dean-ay.” To keep it simple and familiar, I pronounce it as, “duh-nay.”

Tell me more about the Young Artist Competition.
This competition was in Reading, Pennsylvania and I was around 7 years old. The competition had singers from all over the city of all ages. I felt totally natural being on stage and sang my little heart out. I was really surprised to win first place, but in the same breath, it felt right. I think that moment sparked something within me.

You have had the chance to perform all over the world. Where all have you been and what are some of your favorite places to visit?
I’ve been to Cuba, Romania, Turkey, France, Spain, England, and numerous places in the United States. My favorite place, hands down, was Cuba. It felt like home, to be honest. The people, the food, the culture, the weather, the simplicity of life, I’d love to go back! I’ve also been to Bermuda numerous times because that’s where my husband is from.

Who are some of your biggest inspirations?
Without a doubt, Michael Jackson and Beyoncé. Sounds cliché, but I don’t love them because of who the world sees them to be. I love and respect them because of their work ethic. They study and master their craft 24/7. That’s what I model after. RIP MJ.

What is ChristaCourt Productions?
ChristaCourt Productions is a production company that my father and I started. This is also the “label” I’m signed to. My husband and I produce my music and my dad handles the ins and outs of the technical work. My mom also helps with my image. Just a small family label getting ready to do big things. We also offer services like songwriting clinics, various vocal and instrumental coaching, and song arranging/producing. We have a few other clients right now.

Tell me more about your new single, “If God Doesn’t Want It.”
Interestingly enough, I wrote this song when I was thirteen. The lyrics are the same, but the chords were a little different. This is actually the third version of this song. I can’t say I remember writing it because it just came to me all at once. Creating this final version of the song was a lot of fun, though, and the words felt extremely relatable. I was in a time of my life where most things around me didn’t make sense and I was sick of creating my plans only for them to be knocked down to the ground. At that point, the song reminded me that God only wants what’s best for me and that He’s somebody I can always trust. It’s my goal to be in sync with Him. Very simply put, “If God Doesn’t Want It”, I don’t want it.

You are originally from Philadelphia. What is your favorite restaurant in the City of Brotherly Love?
Good question. I consider myself a “foodie.” I don’t have favorite restaurants. I have a favorite food and I find various spots to try those foods because I enjoy tasting various versions of some of my favorite dishes. Any Indian spot in the Philadelphia area is where you can find me.

I don’t see a lot of shows listed on your website. Are you planning a tour anytime soon?
Yes! I’m planning to tour the East Coast this summer. You can find me from Chicago to Virginia and much more!

You have a blog on your website. How often do you publish content?
I post a new blog once a week. I really enjoy posting them, too. Make sure to check my website every week for a new one!

Tell me more about your relationship with MTS Management.
Michael Stover at MTS Management is a huge blessing. He believes in me and does whatever he can to help get the word out. He’s priceless and I couldn’t ask for a better partnership with a promotion company.

People can join your email list on your website. How often do you email your fans and what sort of content are you sending out?
I email my fans about once a month just so they can stay updated on what’s going on. I’ll always have some sort of announcement to keep things exciting. For those that join the mailing list, they’ll be the first ones to know. That could be anything from a song release, new merchandise, behind the scenes stories, exciting press, or even giveaways!

What is the best concert you’ve ever been to?
When I was in college, I went to see the “Jesus At the Center” concert by Israel & New Breed! I had front row seats with incredible friends and musicians. We sang ALL the songs in 3 part harmony. Worshipped like nobody’s business! It was lit. I’ll never forget it.

As a songwriter, what is your process? Do you sit down to write a new song or does it just come to you in your sleep?
All of the above. No process more than the other. Depends on my mood and how I feel like expressing myself in that moment. However, God does often give me songs in my sleep and I record what I have as soon as I get up.

You collaborated with Young One on your new single. How did you connect and what was that experience like?
Fun fact! He’s my husband. If I told you how we connected I would tell you my love story. So it went something like, “Hey, babe. Want to rap on this track?” And he said, “Sure”. (Laughs.) The experience was incredible though. He amazes me every day. I couldn’t ask for a better rapper or artist to collaborate with.

What’s next for Christa Deánā?
I have a new single coming out next month! Following single coming out in June! Full album in the fall! Music video for “If God Doesn’t Want It”. Stay tuned. We’re just getting started! So much to come!

In all of the interviews I do, I always give the artist the last word. Go.
I’m so grateful to be able to do what I love. Every person has a special gift and calling and no one can do what you can do. Regardless of what people say, the world needs you. Don’t waste a single day to give back and make sure to follow your dreams no matter what. There’s so much more to come!
