Artist Interview: 1-on-1 with 12th Planet

Posted by rickyleepotts On August - 30 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

Artist Interview: 1-on-1 with 12th PlanetI haven’t always been a huge fan of this style… but when I saw that Skrillex was coming to town, and was going to be appearing at Electric Zoo… I took notice. Skrillex actually has a sick remix with Benny Benassi for his new single Cinema. Anyway, 12th Planet will be opening up for him here in the Circle City, and will also be performing at Electric Zoo! What a small world. Anyway, I started listening to 12th Planet and fell in love… I liked his work so much I requested an artist interview with him. I just had to learn more about this obviously energetic individual. Before I knew it, I was knee deep in questions and couldn’t wait to meet this guy. I am stoked to see him perform not only in the Big Apple, but also here in Indianapolis later this year. 12th Planet is not for the faint of heart… don’t say I didn’t warn you. His beats are intoxicating. Hang on tight, because this is guy is dance music to a whole new level. It’s my pleasure to introduce you to 12th Planet.

Where did you come up with the name 12th Planet?

The name 12th Planet comes from the book by Zacharia Sitchin called “The 12th Planet”. You can click here to buy 12th Planet.

Rusko has been a big influence on my personal exposure to dubstep, and I know you have worked with him on a few occasions by remixing some of his tracks. Does the whole dubstep scene produce a lot of competition or are there real friendships that spawn from working collaborations?

I only have the most esteemed respect for my peers. It takes a lot of balls to make music, and to perform in front of people. I wouldn’t say its a competition or a popularity race, but more about inspiration. When I hear an innovative production technique from another artist, it inspires me to keep making music.

You have not been performing for that long… you started back in 2006. What made you want to get into this?

This is not true at all.  I have been producing and DJing out under the moniker 12th Planet for about 4 or 5 years, but before that I produced under the name Infiltrata – I have been producing music since 1999, and 12th Planet is my 3rd project in the last 12 years. I got into dubstep while touring through England, and hearing it from my peers. I saw a lot of correlations between dubstep and DNB, and I was hooked the minute I heard it.

You are playing on the Red Bull Riverside stage on Saturday at Electric Zoo. I bet you are getting excited about that show. What can fans expect from your performance?

This is my first time at Electric Zoo, so I’m not sure what to expect. I know it’s on an island, and that’s rad. I love Red Bull, and especially the West Coast staff.  So you can only expect 110% out of me during my set!

In 2010 you worked with M.I.A. on a single. When you remix an artist like that, do you actually get to work with the artist directly or are you just handed the vocals for that song?

All remixes are different, sometimes you get to work with an artist, most of the time you don’t. I am a big fan of M.I.A. and was asked to do it by the HARD festival for a competition they were hosting! I was completely honored to be a part of the project, and still maintain relations with the NEET and the HARD crew.

You have played all over the globe. Is it possible, having played so many clubs, to pick a favorite venue? For that matter, a favorite country?

I have played all over the place, but nothing beats playing in my hometown LA!

SXSW – I have always wanted to go to that. What was that experience like? Speaking of SXSW, you play a lot of festivals. Do you prefer to play festivals or do you like playing in the clubs?

SXSW is a music experience I would recommend everyone to be a part of. You get to see the upcoming talent in the early stages of their career, and in some cases you get to see bands and artists right before they explode. It’s a week where drunken friendships are made, and BBQ runs amuck.

Tell me a little bit more about your relationship & your role with SMOG.

SMOG is a record label that I co-founded with Drew Best, but it’s also the first dubstep brand to come out of Los Angeles circa 2006. We would throw parties, and provide DJs for other people who needed dubstep at their parties. Now it has become a dubstep / future bass brand that does events nationally.

Looks like you like to crowd surf. That can’t be safe! Do you work that into your show, or just let it happen when it feels right?

Sometimes you just gotta jump! It’s liberating.

What would you be doing if you were not performing?

I would be in the studio 100%.

You are constantly on the road. Do you ever get home sick?

I feel more at home on the road than at home, I think I’m just on the road so much, that I’ve found solace in it. I look forward to seeing my friends and acquaintances I’ve met through the years when I travel.

I feel like I could ask you questions all day man… thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to sit down with me. In all of the interviews I do, I always give the artist the last word. Go.

THE END IS NEAR!

12th Planet will be in Indianapolis on Thursday, November 10! He is on the road with Skrillex on The Mothership Tour. They will be performing at the Egyptian Room at the Old National Centre right here in the heart of Indianapolis.

Sander van Doorn – Eleve11 Album Review

Posted by rickyleepotts On August - 30 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

Sander van Doorn - Eleve11 Album ReviewWho doesn’t like a new release? I rarely write album reviews. I listen to so much music; I would never be able to write a review for every album that I listen to. But when the new Sander van Doorn album came across my desk, I had no choice. It’s that good. I recently sat down with Sander for an exclusive artist interview, and while I knew he was working on a new album, I didn’t ask him too many questions about it. The album doesn’t come out until the end of September anyway.

1. Interlude // Love Is Darkness (feat. Carol Lee)

Right out of the gate, I was excited for this album. I am a big fan of his, and I love the title. 11 songs… that’s not very many for a DJ, but that’s okay. I didn’t need any more than this. He was able to pull me in, grab hold, and not let go… one song after another.

The progression that leads into Love Is Darkness sets you up for an hour plus of engaging dance heavy beats. Love Is Darkness might be the best single on the album. Carol Lee is great; I love her voice. She complements Sander well. I wonder if she ever tours with him…

2. Koko

Not sure why this song is called Koko… and I don’t really care. When I first started listening to electronic dance music, I was worried I would get bored with it. I was afraid that I would wake up one day, and want to move back into something I was more comfortable with. There was a time in my life that country music was all that I could listen to. Then I moved into rock and alternative. Now… dance. And I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Koko is repetitive, as is most dance music, but that’s okay. It builds on itself and continues to throw more into the mix. They don’t call this stuff dance music because you stand still. Get up and move. Koko is the first song on the album that will do just that.

3. Believe (feat. Tom Helsen)

Believe starts out with some heavy piano, and then Tom Helsen jumps in. “I’m giving in, letting go, and I’m not afraid boy…” Lyrics in dance music, vocal trance for the most part, makes this stuff even more enjoyable for me. Without words it would just be beats. So when artists add the vocals, I get excited.

Guys like Above & Beyond will sometimes add their own vocals. Often times you will see a DJ use a guest performer. In this song, as on many others in his catalog, he uses a featured performer.

4. Nano

One thing I love about Sander, as well as many of the other great DJs out there, is how their music sounds from one song to the next. This might be hard to explain, but it’s consistently good and sounds like it’s on a totally different level than everything else out there. I use Armin van Buuren as the epitome of this, but Sander is getting there with his latest release.

Nano, like nearly every other song on this album, has a certain sense of progression here, and builds from one moment to the next. I dare you to listen to a track like this and not bob your head.

5. Rolling the Dice with Sidney Samson (feat. Nadia Ali)

I love Las Vegas… so a song that is titled Rolling The Dice makes me think of Sin City. Add Nadia Ali to the mix and you got my attention. She is only 31 years old, and has worked with a TON of artists including Sander van Doorn, Armin van Buuren, Roger Sanchez… an endless list of superstars.

I just keep going back to the lyrics. They make this album, as not every song has lyrics nor do they need them. It has the ability to bring you up and keep you moving.

6. Beyond Sound (Godskitchen Urban Wave mix)

Not sure what makes this the Godskitchen Urban Wave Mix, but I like it. I am sure there is something behind that… But this album is sort stuck on repeat. You get a track with lyrics, then a song that is simply beats. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, but I feel like it will be over before I know it. I am not sure 11 songs are enough.

I wonder what made him decide to do 11 songs. Well, 12 if you count the one he gave away on his Facebook page.

7. Timezone (feat. Frederick)

Who is Frederick? Who cares, this song is incredible. Can you tell I like this album? Every song has me saying something positive. Maybe it’s a good thing I don’t write a ton of album reviews. I would get used to saying the same thing, and like an album just because of who produced it. I have been into Sander for a long time, but when good friend Johnny Monsoon vouched for him as well… I was hooked.

Frederick doesn’t add as much power to this single as the ladies do. I could almost do without his vocals. But the beats in the background manage to bring the song to fruition.

8. Drink to Get Drunk

Do you drink water to quench your thirst? Man… another incredible track. Love Is Darkness is already hitting the top of the charts, but I will be shocked if this, among others on this album, doesn’t join it at the top. The lyrics stop about halfway through yet the beats keep up with the same feel you had from the start. I have said it before, and I will say it again, but this album makes me dance in my chair!

9. Who’s Wearing the Cap with Laidback Luke

I had the chance to see Laidback Luke last year at Electric Zoo. The dude put on a KILLER set. He was jumping around the stage, and having a blast. I even got the chance to chat with him a bit in the press tent. When I heard that Sander was working with him on a single, I figured it would turn out great. It did.

One thing that impresses me about these guys is how young they are. Or how young they appear to be on stage. Just look at the fun they have jumping around on stage night after night, then hitting the studio to produce these beats. What a life.

10. Slap My Pitch Up

Not sure I have ever heard it put that way… but as the album starts to wind down you can feel it in the music. The last couple of tracks, this one included, has a subtle settling feel about it. Sure, you will still get up and move… but it’s not the same progression that you have felt throughout the rest of the album.

Slap My Pitch Up is dark, more depressing than the rest of the album. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. You get a little deep bass toward the first part of the track, and then it just continues as the song proceeds.

11. Eagles with Adrian Lux

There is a HUGE pause before you get into track 11. I almost thought it was over, and when I started counting the tracks in my head I knew we couldn’t be done. Just when I was about to call it quits, Eagles starts up to send us home.

This is a great way to end the album, and features another incredible artist with Adrian Lux. I just keep going back to how epic this album is, and how incredible it sounds from one song to the next and as a complete collection of tunes. I am very impressed with this, and can’t wait to see what’s next for Sander van Doorn.

That’s it… only 11 songs. Hence the name of the album, I suppose. Funny thing though, there was another track. The song was called TRACK 12. Instead of putting it on the album, Sander decided to give it away for free. This single was released on August 26 on his Facebook page. This album is one of the best releases I have heard in a long time, from Sander or from anyone. I don’t want to dog on Armin’s new release… but this is better. Well-done Sander.

Richie Hawtin: PLASTIKMAN LIVE at Electric Zoo

Posted by rickyleepotts On August - 29 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

An invitation from Richie Hawtin: PLASTIKMAN LIVE at Electric ZooOn behalf of electronic music producer and performer Richie Hawtin, I’d like to extend an invite to his PLASTIKMAN LIVE performance this Friday, September 2 at 9:40 PM at the Hilltop Arena as he closes out the first day of Electric Zoo. Performing under his darker alter-ego PLASTIKMAN, the Berlin-based artist will bring his one-hour live experience that explores the connection between audio, visual and interactivity as he debuts PLASTIKMAN LIVE for the first time ever in New York City.

If you happen to be an iPhone or iPod Touch user, we are kindly asking you download the PLASTIKMAN SYNK app in advance of the show. SYNK is available now for free in the iTunes app store. Compatible with iPhone or iPod touch. Requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later. Conceptualized by Hawtin and developed with RJ Fischer (http://hexler.net) and Bryan McDade (Minus), this customized iPhone/iPod Touch application is the official companion of the current PLASTIKMAN LIVE worldwide tour. SYNK users will participate in an experiment in audience-performer interaction aiming to blur the lines of perception and participation.

PLASTIKMAN LIVE was voted the best live act of 2010 by Resident Advisor readers and also was included in U.K. tastemaker magazine MixMag’s best live dance act shortlist. Since launching March 2010 at Timewarp in Mannheim, Germany, the PLASTIKMAN show has been under a constant state of evolution helmed by Hawtin and his partners visual architects Derivative and visual designer Ali Demirel.

PLASTIKMAN LIVE is a fully immerse real-time interactive concept experience. It is the only show where the entire event has been created from the ground up with the artist (Richie Hawtin/PLASTIKMAN) spearheading each part of the development and vision. There is one performer–Richie Hawtin aka PLASTIKMAN – on stage employing the cutting edge and custom technology to control the entire audio/visual and lighting experience, with live real-time generative visuals (no timed coded pre-rendered video or movies) in connection with cutting edge Derivative TouchDesigner software, live control over DMX-controlled lighting (custom Ableton Live Midi>DMX solution), and real-time audience/performer interaction and communication with the custom iPhone SYNK App (The only live concert that allows the audience to control part of the show, HUD readouts, audience/performer chat client, live on stage camera feed, etc.).

Richie Hawtin will also DJ a separate set at Electric Zoo in addition to presenting PLASTIKMAN LIVE on Sunday, September 4.

About Richie Hawtin

Artist, DJ, conceptualist and ambassador, more than anyone else in modern electronic music, Richie Hawtin has proved himself to be a true innovator. The one-man mogul behind acclaimed Techno imprints Plus 8 & Minus sends signals out all over the world from his HQ in an old fire station in Windsor, Ontario – just across the border from Detroit, the techno city of the 80’s. The signals are constantly evolving: his Plastikman persona gave Techno a unique face with a series of four ruthlessly minimal albums, while his breathtaking live sets at the Glastonbury festival and Tribal Gathering helped invent stadium techno. In 1995, the futurist Richie Hawtin was invited to show his work in Canada, in an event for the new millenium, in which the sculptor Anish Kapoor was also showing work. This was Hawtin’s first encounter with the works of an artist who has had an immense influence on his own process.  Today Richie Hawtin continues to evolve and develop his music and performance skills, deftly deploying new technology in the service of his art.

JES was affectionately dubbed “the voice of Tiësto” for her work on his “Elements Of Life” album and subsequent world tour. A New York native, JES’ songs have led numerous radio and club charts. Her voice is instantly recognizable from the chart-topping pop hit, As The Rush Comes, as Motorcycle with Gabriel & Dresden. That hit song was named Billboard Magazine’s “#4 most played dance song of the decade” from Billboard’s 2000-2010 charts, no small feat considering the endless output of faceless electronica. JES has collaborated with the world’s leading DJs/producers, including Tiësto, BT, Armin van Buuren, Gabriel & Dresden, Richard Durand and others. She is sought-after not only for her magical voice, but for her command of audiences when performing live. Multi-national corporations have taken notice, and JES has composed original music for Coca-Cola and performed live during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. JES is a darling of the international entertainment press, having appeared on the UK’s “Top Of The Pops” TV program in 2004 alongside Beyoncé and Maroon 5.

Artist Interview: 1-on-1 with Ferry Corsten

Posted by rickyleepotts On August - 28 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

Artist Interview: 1-on-1 with Ferry CorstenElectric Zoo is just around the corner… This year there are so many incredible artists to look forward to. Last year, it was only two days… but this year, three. There are a lot of new faces on the roster this time, and I am looking forward to three days of beats. But one artist that I am really looking forward to seeing is Ferry Corsten. This guy has been around for quite some time, and has produced some incredible dance tracks that you might not even attribute him to. He has a certain epic sound about him, and I would put him in the same league as David Guetta, Paul Oakenfold, and Armin van Buuren.

Not heard of Ferry Corsten? Perhaps you have heard of A Jolly Good Fellow, Albion, Bypass, Cyber F, Eon, Exiter, Ferr, Firmly Underground, Free Inside, Kinky Toys, Lunalife, Moonman, Pulp Victim, Pulse, Raya Shaku, Riptide, Sidewalk, Sidewinder, Skywalker, System F, Tellurians, or The Nutter. Those are all the aliases that he has. He has also worked on several collaborative efforts with guys like Benny Benassi, Vincent de Moor, and Tiësto. The guy has been around for quite some time, and just continues to get better. I am really looking forward to seeing him at Electric Zoo, but I am even more pumped to introduce you to him right here… ladies and gentlemen, it’s my absolute pleasure to introduce you to Ferry Corsten.

You got my vote… how cool is it to be nominated as one of the top 100 DJs? That list is always packed with talent.

Thanks for your vote. It’s really great to be nominated as one of the top 100 DJs. It shows to me that people still enjoy my music and that really motivates me to keep doing what I do.

I am always curious… what sort of headphones do DJs use? What headphones are you currently using?

I think every DJ has his own preference when it comes to headphones. I myself use Pioneer HDJ2000.

Are you getting pumped for Electric Zoo?

Yes, Electric Zoo is one of the biggest festivals for me. It’s Labor Day weekend so the crowd is all hyped up. Can’t wait to play out my new tunes!

Tell me about your relationship with Ultra Records.

Ultra has been the record company in the USA who has released my last artist albums and “Once Upon A Night”. I’m glad to have them as our partner.

I love it that you have a logo. It’s so simple and clear. Speaking of a logo, you have built a pretty great brand for yourself. It appears you understand the business side of the music industry. How important do you think building a brand as a musician is as it relates to overall success of the artist?

I am Ferry Corsten, artist and the brand. People have to know what a brand stands for. Like you go to Starbucks, you get good coffee and when you go to Ferry Corsten, you get the best music and show there is!

You have released a TON of albums and singles… and remixes. Is there any possible way to pick a favorite track you have produced?

That’s a really tough question; I can’t really pick one. If I can name a few in random order:

  • Rock Your Body Rock
  • Punk
  • Out of the Blue
  • Made Of Love
  • Check It Out
  • Barber’s Adigio For Strings (Ferry Corsten Remix)

You are playing the Hilltop Arena at Electric Zoo on Saturday. There are a ton of other great artists on the bill. Anyone you are excited to check out?

This might come as a surprise but I don’t really have that much time whenever I am playing at a festival or party. I usually arrive an hour before I go on stage. Talk with some people or give away some interviews, play my gig and go on to the next one.

You are pretty much collecting awards these days. You have won Best Producer of the Year by the Ericsson Music Awards and Best Trance DJ by the Ibiza DJ Awards. Does any one award mean more to you than the next?

No all awards are special to me. It’s the recognition you get from the people who take the time to vote for me because they like what I do.

You have an iPhone and iPad app. (Also available on Blackberry and Android.) Tell me a little bit more about the app, and what users can expect to experience with the app.

You can download the app for free and it basically keeps you up to date about where I am and my music. With the app you can listen to my music, follow my Twitter and view pictures and videos. These are only a couple of options of the app so make sure to check it out!

A lot of the top producers out there have a radio show or podcast. What makes your radio show different from all of the other performers?

My show is interactive. This means that the listeners have influence on what will be played. They can vote for their favorite track after each episode and the three tracks with the most votes will be played in the show the week after. Besides that I always try to pick the best and newest tracks of the moment!

There are just so many great DJs out there… are you guys friends or is it pretty much competition at the top?

We see each other around gigs but unfortunately don’t get to see them as much when I’m back as I’m always in the studio. I recently finished a track called Brute together with Armin Van Buuren so we spend some days in the studio which was really nice. I’ve known Armin for years, and this the 4th single we have done together.

Outside of electronic dance music, what’s the best concert you have ever been to?

To be honest, when I am not traveling I am so happy to be at home. I love to go out for a good dinner with friends rather than going to a concert.

You also go by System F. What’s the story behind that alias? (Other aliases include A Jolly Good Fellow, Albion, Bypass, Cyber F, Ferr, Free Inside, Pulp Victim, and many more.)

System F I choose because of the way I produce music. I always have my standard way of producing a track. It’s like a System. And F comes from my name Ferry.

What’s next from the Ferry Corsten camp? Can we expect another album in the  near future?

I am currently working on my new artist album which I really enjoy making. I might be testing some of the tunes on Electric Zoo, so keep your ears open!

I feel like I could sit here and ask you questions all day, but I know you are a busy man. In all of the interviews that I do, I always give the artist the last word. Go.

Keep enjoying dance music, come visit me when I am in your area, and check out my website www.ferrycorsten.com for the latest updates on my new album! Thanks for the interview!

Conan the Barbarian 3D Movie Review

Posted by rickyleepotts On August - 27 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

Conan the Barbarian 3D Movie ReviewThere is something to be said about a movie when the best thing about it is the narration. Even so, Morgan Freeman (why he agreed to do this is a mystery to me) seems to be droning on like a bored history teacher who doesn’t seem to care if we’re listening or not.

This is where Conan The Barbarian begins. Conan is literally born into the battlefield and fighting seems to be all he cares about, except for his father played by Ron Perlman. Perlman is only on screen for a short amount of time but he appears to be bored teaching his son how to become the ultimate warrior. His village, and his father, are destroyed by a deadly warrior by the name of Khalar Zim, who just wants the missing piece of a mask so he can resurrect his late wife and become all powerful.

Fast forward years later and Conan is now an adult, seeking revenge for his father’s death. As Conan, Jason Momoa has the body but his acting is atrocious. All of his dialogue seems forced and the chemistry he has with Tamara, played by Rachel Nichols, is nonexistent. There is one scene they have… it’s just awkward and badly choreographed.

In all reality, the only one who seems to be having any fun while also knowing how terrible the movie is, is Rose McGowan. As Marique, the daughter of Khalar Zim, she is over the top and looks like she belongs in the Star Wars universe.

In conclusion, Conan The Barbarian feels like it should be a cheesy mini-series for the sci-fi channel rather than a two-hour movie. The acting is bad, the dialogue is worse (you look like a harlot) and the editing is choppy. Save your money and if you must see it, wait until it’s on cable.

Sander van Doorn Announces New Artist Album Eleve11

Sander van Doorn Announces New Artist Album Eleve11Once in a while an album comes your way that blows the boundaries of music sky high. With every harmony, every melody and every word, you feel it. A true artist album is at hand; rare in our seemingly disposable dance music “track by track” society, but here before you is an expressive, magnetic and exciting body of work. A definitive moment in dance music has arrived. This is “Eleve11″ from Sander van Doorn.

“Eleve11″ is the album that will redefine what an artist album can be. Hauntingly beautiful and evocative songs, spine tingling buildups and breakdowns, emotionally charged vocals and the powerful and palatable kinetic musical energy of Sander van Doorn. From the moment you hit play until the very last note is revealed, listeners will experience Sander on a brilliant new level. With precision, he winds together his years of songwriting and production prowess into a masterful collection of music. Ever the perfectionist, you can bet that Eleve11 caries the sonic boom that will leave every Sander fan breathless, but also exposes the true genius of the artist within.

From groundbreaking vocal triumphs (Timezone, Eagles, Love is Darkness) to massive hook laden pleasures (Koko, Believe, Drink to Get Drunk), “Eleve11″ lays waste to any notion that artist and genre are synonymous. Sander has blurred the lines so seamlessly, for so long, that one has to wonder- was there ever a line to begin with?

Your “ah-ha” moment will come as you lose yourself in the other worldly vocals of Frederick on Timezone. With a buildup full of intensity and tension, Sander brings the poignant prose to its spectacular apex. You will feel it when he weeps, “But there ain’t no train going home, there is no soul to see me down that road.” Chills of perfection at no extra charge!

“Eleve11″ also features some impressive cameos from a few of Sander’s closest friends.

Rolling the Dice, is a monster collaboration with Sidney Samson and Nadia Ali. It retains all the visceral club energy of both Sander and Sidney with the sultry storytelling that only Nadia could provide. Bright driving melodies with just the right amount of punch will have listeners begging for more (and singing along). Who’s Wearing the Cap is sure to be an instant fan favorite as two of the most prolific and talented electronic music producers unite! Laidback Luke lends his apt skill on this one for what can only be described as a musical tsunami! Can you tell them apart or were they separated at birth?

Of course, what would “Eleve11″ be without the original hits that have made Sander such a massive artist? Love is Darkness; the vocal masterpiece that opened the world’s eyes to Sander’s true songwriting ability is the only way to start the album. Followed closely by what some might say is his biggest anthem, Koko- who weaves her whistle happy, unforgettable hook and groove right in.

Artist Interview: 1-on-1 with Victor Calderone

Posted by rickyleepotts On August - 24 - 20111 COMMENT

Artist Interview: 1-on-1 with Victor CalderoneAs we begin to prepare for Electric Zoo, I am taking a ton of time to focus on the artists. From sharing press releases on new tours to previewing a new album, I am pretty much dedicating my blog to this event. Of course, it is one of the biggest electronic music festivals on the planet. I was there last year, and will be there again this year bringing you tons of coverage including artist interviews. Speaking of artist interviews, I am also doing that before I head to NYC. I recently had the chance to sit down with Victor Calderone, a New York City native, to discuss everything from his shift in sound to his impending boat party. Imagine that… partying on a boat. We talk about all that and more. It’s my pleasure to introduce you to Victor Calderone.

I bet you are getting excited for Electric Zoo. You are a part of the Carl Cox & Friends Take Over Sunday School… so does that mean you are friends with Carl Cox?

Yeah, Carl and I have known each other for five or six years now. I have been a fan of his for quite some time, for as far back as I remember. I saw him for the first time in Miami at a winter music conference. I was just blown away. Carl is the “DJ’s DJ”. He’s just a machine.

Speaking Electric Zoo, it’s in New York City… you are originally from New York City. Have you always lived in New York?

Yeah, I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York… it’s my hometown.

Are you a Yankees fan?

I am not a big sports buff. Not baseball… not one of my favorites. Not a sport I follow. Of course, when they are in the playoffs I root for my home team. I wasn’t big into sports; I was too busy in my bedroom DJing.

A lot of DJs have a podcast… and you just released a new one. Tell me a little bit more about Manipulating Waveforms.

It was a podcast series concept that we came up with. Unfortunately, I don’t do as many as I would like to. Time is just a bit against me… having a family and traveling. The series was something I wanted to give to the fans. I was never a fan of putting out compilation albums. I thought this series could be something to give back, to download, and to enjoy. The whole aspect of it being free… I am about to work on another now to have out before Electric Zoo.

I don’t like to overdo it. Fans are always reaching out for me to put out another one. Soon enough…

I see that you have joined the ARTIST ALIFE. Tell me a little bit more about that… did you go looking for them or did they find you?

It’s funny, it happened through AM Only. We wanted to lock down some good European representation, and the guys at AM Only recommended ARTIST ALIFE. They had an ongoing relationship with them. It felt like the right direction.

I played with Loco Dice a couple of times, and he is really amazing. He has opened himself up to me. He has pulled me in as part of the family that they have there. It’s great, and it’s what I needed in Europe. We are really going to focus heavy next year with them, and really try to knock down some territories and break into some territories that I haven’t been exposed to.

I went through a few reincarnations with my career and with my sound… that was years ago when I had a really big gay following… I changed my sound and it’s opened up a lot of really great opportunities to play some great places, festivals and events around the world. There are a lot of people out there that still have the perception of me when I was playing these gay events. Bringing ARTIST ALIFE on board, and focusing on just being heard in some of these places that I haven’t played is the plan, and the focus. It has been working already. This is the best summer I have ever had.

Your first name is Victor… do you prefer Victor or Vic?

Oh, Vic. (Laughs) My friends call me Vic.

I am in New York City all the time… and have yet to see Pacha NYC. You have seen it; you were a resident DJ there! You were actually named “Best Resident DJ” by DJ & Club World Magazine. What’s that place like? Do you prefer playing the same room like that, being a resident DJ, or do you like to travel and play all over the world?

In certain cities, I prefer a residency. Only because it allows me to build and develop something that people look forward to. Of course, in your hometown it’s great to have a residency. If it develops into something special, then the word spreads worldwide. There is a lot to say about a residency that is consistent… one that people look forward to.

I do enjoy the other aspect of traveling around and playing in different territories too. Pacha… what can I say? They are great operators. They really know what they are doing, really get behind the DJs, and I have a lot of respect for how they do it. It’s very difficult to operate a club in New York City these days, and they have managed to make the right choices.

You must like Madonna… you have remixed several of her singles. You actually have a personal relationship with her. She originally asked for you to remix her single Frozen. But it didn’t stop there. You have remixed more of her stuff. Do you two still stay in touch? What’s the process like when remixing an artist like that?

We haven’t been in touch for some time now. We have just run into each other at certain events, and just said hello. That was pretty special time in my career. It was a lot of fun. It was a very different thing than what I am doing now. It launched my career. It really got me out there. She was great to work with. It was really incredible.

Through working with her, so many other doors opened. So many people watch what she does and follow from that… so many big artists reached out to me… a lot of doors opened from that. She introduced me to Sting, and that’s how that whole collaboration came out. It was a great time, and she was great to work with. She really understood it. There are some other big pop artists that didn’t understand it, or care to understand it… with those I would just get the vocal parts and do the mix. Madonna was great, as she gave me feedback and was really helpful. It was a great time.

Right after Electric Zoo, you have a boat party to prepare for. Labor Day weekend will be busy for you… you ready for a weekend of beats? I just realized that you are playing at the Guvernment on Saturday. That’s in Canada. The boat party is in Canada!

I did the boat party last year, for the first time. There is just this energy and excitement the moment the boat leaves the dock. It’s indescribable. The music isn’t even on at that point. People are so amped up and ready. Last year was my first one, in Toronto, and I just had the best time. I could not ask for a better audience or setting. You are on a boat… in the ocean… playing records with a crowd in front of you. What more could you ask for. I am really looking forward to doing it again.

I am really enjoying Toronto a lot. The Guvernment is an incredible club, how long they have been there and the talent that they bring through there. It’s pretty special. I am looking forward to that weekend.

Tell me a little bit more about Evolve.

That was something that, at the moment, when we made that decision to change my sound, and go in a different direction, it just made sense. It makes sense and really represents what I’m doing right now… making this change and taking this risk. We just ran with it. It’s been great, as a lot of the clubs and the promoters are excited about bringing the brand into the clubs and pushing it.

This is my new sound. It totally makes sense for where my career is at right now. As an artist, like I said before, you need to take those risks and you need to evolve.  We all need to evolve.

There are a ton of talented guys out there… who is your favorite DJ? What’s on your iPod?

At the moment, I really been digging what Loco Dice has been doing… those guys. Richie Hawtin. For me, right now, what they’re doing is outstanding. In the studio and their live sets have been really inspiring.

On my iPod… I don’t listen to my iPod much. When I am home I try to take a break from music. I let my wife take over the music in the house. It’s find of refreshing. People think that when I’m home, I am banging house music 24 hours a day. It’s pretty chill, and my wife has a lot of electronica and stuff that she’s been buying and turning me on to. That’s what goes on in my home. (Laughs)

I always give the artist the last word. Go.

Thank you for this incredible journey that we have been on and for all of the support. It’s been amazing, and I am immensely grateful.
