Horror Films: Adam Wingard Presents You're Next

Adam Wingard Presents You’re Next

On Friday night we were in Tempe for the Phoenix Back to School Pub Crawl. While we were standing in line waiting to get in, someone handed me a mask. I laughed and put it on. Sheryl said it was to promote a new movie coming out called You’re Next. I was immediately intrigued, and we agreed to see it on Saturday night.

My Aunt Sandy and Uncle Jim sent me a Fandango gift certificate for my birthday, so we used that. Thanks for the gift card, guys! We need to plan a long weekend to come see you. Anyway, we bought tickets and went to see the movie on Saturday. We left a little early as we expected the theater to be packed. It wasn’t and we were able to get good seats right in the middle.

The movie was… Well, it was interesting. There are a lot of actors in this movie, but stars Sharni Vinson, Joe Swanberg and AJ Bowen. Only 1 of the actors looked familiar, which made the entire film feel like a low budget independent release. Sheryl told me, after the movie, it was an indie film and it took several years for it to reach the big screen. According to Wikipedia, this film premiered in 2011 at the Toronto International Film Festival.

According to IMBd, “When the Davison family comes under attack during their wedding anniversary getaway, the gang of mysterious killers soon learns that one of victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back.” That’s pretty much it!

The movie was good, but if I had produced it, I would have made some changes. I don’t want to know who these killers are. I don’t want to see their faces and I don’t want a resolution. I want this to be a totally random act of murder and for us to leave the theater confused to create our own ending. Maybe I should produce a major motion picture and make it a social experiment on how people want it to end, now how I thought it should end.

The movie was really good. I liked it. It full of blood and guts, so don’t go see it unless you have a stomach for that. There is one scene, near the end of the movie, where a blender is used to kill a guy. Yeah, it’s intense!

Like I said, the movie was good. It left me thinking about what I would have done different. The masks, while Sheryl thought they were funny, were creepy.  Maybe the next time they produce a slasher film like this, the bad guys can wear a horse mask! Ha!!!

You’re Next was directed by Adam Wingard (V/H/S, Pop Skull, Paradox Mary, The Girlfriend).
