Artist Interview: 1-on-1 with Lycoriscoris

Lycoriscoris is a Japanese producer that recently released a single titled “Flight” on Anjunadeep. This single is the title track of his upcoming EP. I was so impressed with his sound, I reached out for an interview. Lycoriscoris was quick to respond and was excited for the opportunity to promote this new release. The EP will also be released on Anjunadeep, and you can hear more of his stuff on the Anjunadeep New Releases (Deep House, Techno, Electronic) playlist on Spotify. I really enjoy his music and it was a blast getting to learn more about this young talent. It is my pleasure to introduce you to Lycoriscoris.

You recently released a single titled “Flight” on Anjunadeep. Tell me more about that release.
Sorry for the delaying. The EP was already released. You can listen to that here.

Your name is Yunosuke Senoo but you go by Lycoriscoris. What is the story behind that name and why did you decide to go with Lycoriscoris?
“Lycoris” came from flower’s meaning. It include the meaning, “I’m looking forward to see you again.” In any case, I feel sad to say goodbye when some one leaves. I was inspired that phrase and wanted to use that ward. “Coris” is just playing on word.

I’ve not been to Japan yet. What is the music scene like there?
All Japanese club music might be unique.

“Flight” is the title track on your new EP. How many songs are on the EP?
I like something that can beyond to everywhere. Bird is the symbol of liberty.

Tell me about your relationship with moph records.
moph records found me and gave me a chance to release my first single. I think they are one of cool label in Japan. They released the album of artists like mergrim, Shotaro Hirata, THE PEOPLE IN FOG aka DJ SODEYAMA and repeat pattern.

What are some of your favorite nightclubs in Tokyo?
Super Deluxe, VENT, and WOMB.

“Flight” was also released on vinyl. We are starting to see more and more of that. What made you decide to release this on vinyl.
I like a sound of vinyl. In other words I like a sound of analogue. I often use some analogue gear to make sounds like a open reel tape and cassette tape. The vinyl is best way that I want to express.

You have a very unique sound. Who are some of your biggest influences?
Umm so difficult to answer. To be honest I don’t have especially artist who influences to me. But all music that exist in the world influenced me.

What is KOMPAKT KX?
A. It’s sub label of Kompakt.

You made your debut in 2016. You contributed a track on Anjunabeats 08. What single was that and is that what jumpstarted your career?
I actually I released first time was 2011 via moph records in Japan. But after my second release, to be honest it became to be difficult to express in Japan. Because before 2016, my market was only Japan. To spread the market and delivery my music to world, I needed to change the way.

Did you enjoy working with Anjunabeats? Tell me more about that experience.
The label I released is Anjunadeep. Yes of cause. They take care me good and we discussed a lot for good release.

Do you do a lot of live shows, or are you just spending time in the studio?
Not recently. Because I spent time to make album this year. All my life is in my studio.

You are also a photographer. What sort of camera do you use and where can we see some of your photographs?
Yeah I hope to be photographer as well. I often use film photo and using Carl Zeiss’s lens. I often post my photo on my Facebook page. If you can, I want you to introduce my page.

What’s next for Lycoriscoris?
I have no future. (Laughs.)

Thank you for doing this. In all of the interview I do, I always give the artist the last word. Go.
Thank you so much. I was excited to answer the questions! I will go.
