Artist Interview: 1-on-1 with Rosehip

Forever inspired by the world around us, Rosehip’s sensory brand of vibrant, atmospheric beats paint pictures in your mind, transporting you into another world. With an array of successful releases, including “Awake”, “Gold” and “Sailors”, Rosehip boasts over 10 million streams on all DSPs, which led him to becoming a household name in the chillwave, electronica and lo-fi music spaces.

Announcing his forthcoming EP, Odyssey, Rosehip is set to plunge deeper into his musical identity with his career-defining body of work. The five-track EP represents a late-summer inspired journey through catchy riffs, joyful melodies and dazzling soundscapes. In addition, a series of collaborative releases with vocalists, musicians and producers represent the next stage of his blossoming career. Inviting listeners into a carefree dimension that helps to melt away everyday troubles or stress, Rosehip continues to bloom into one of the scene’s most essential artists.

Where did the name come from?
I saw it one day on a bottle of rosehip oil. After years of searching for a name that fitted my sound and artistic identity, I knew it was the one!

There are a lot of great nightclubs in London. Where is your favorite place to see a show?
Printworks London has to be one of the best for me. fabric London, O2 Academy Brixton and KOKO deserve a special mention too!

“Bloom” is the third single from your forthcoming EP. LOVE this track, man. Tell me more about the release.
Thank you! “Bloom” is a relaxed lo-fi beat I made last summer. I was experimenting with recording vocal harmonies, adding pitch and formant shifting to create interesting tones and textures. Ended up with a nice riff so put a beat on it, added some extra layers and “Bloom” was created.

What about the other two singles you’ve released?
“Found”, the first single from my upcoming EP Odyssey, provides an instant dose of serotonin, with playful synths and airy pads achieving a warm and immersive sound. With spoken-word lyrics from emerging London-based poet Kali Says What, the second single “Yawn” exudes peace and tranquility, gradually building with deep flourishing synths and an array of intricate sound design.

How many singles will be on the EP?
Odyssey will be five tracks in total, telling tales of late-summer.

And why an EP and not a full-length album?
In 2022 I released my debut album Origins, a musical blueprint for the Rosehip brand or the “origin story” if you will. After this I was keen to follow up with a shorter more punchy collection of tracks. Odyssey is more like a collection of themed singles as opposed to the musical adventure that is my album Origins.

You shared a short video on Instagram to promote “Bloom”. Where did you film that? And who is that lady? Is that the same lady on the album cover?
The video on my Instagram was filmed at Wast Water in the Lake District in Northwest England. It is one of the most serenely beautiful and peaceful places in the UK, and that lady is my serenely beautiful girlfriend.

What is Big Tune Club and how did you connect with them?
Big Tune Club is my go-to for anything related to audio engineering. It was started by my school friend who has gone on to be a very successful and accomplished engineer and artist in his own right. I get my tracks mastered with them and they help out with anything else from audio repair and cleaning samples to occasional mixing work.

“Bloom” is out now on Xoji Records. Tell me more about that label and your experience working with them on this release.
Xoji Records is my very own label, set up to independently release my music. I have exciting plans for Xoji in the future.

Bloom

I am writing a thesis on meditation. Listening to this single makes me want to close my eyes and get lost. Not really a question, just letting you know how it makes me feel!
Fantastic! It was exactly that sort of idea that fueled its creation so it’s great you feel the same thing.

You have a fun road trip planned this summer. Tell me more about that trip and where you’ll be visiting. Not sure if you follow Ryan Farish, but he’s done/doing something similar here in the States!
Wonderful! I have many plans to go to many places, however this summer the plan is to travel to Scandinavia. From what I hear its very campervan friendly and shouldn’t be too hot for life in the van during the long summer nights.

What else can you tell me about Rosehip, your new single, and the new EP coming soon?
My next single, coming out on May 19, is an exciting one! “Nectar” is Rosehip’s first official vocal collaboration. It’s a track rich with summer energy and colour, featuring the catchy vocals of Hungarian-born London-based singer/songwriter Thpcmkr. For sure it’s not to be missed!

Thanks for doing this, man. I enjoyed getting to know you. In all the interviews I do, I always give the artist the last word. Go.
Follow me on Instagram and TikTok to stay up to date with my music and adventures, of which there will be plenty. Otherwise, get out there and enjoy life, and make it count!
