Artist Interview: 1-on-1 with John Vento

Artist Interview: 1-on-1 with John Vento

When I get an email from Michael Stover, I pay attention. Last week he introduced me to John Vento, a musician based out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He recently released a new album and has been doing work with MTS Management Group. After listening to a few songs on Love, Lust & Other Wreckage, I was hooked. I reached out to Michael to schedule an interview. Within a few days John and I become quick friends and I really enjoyed our time together. This guy has a ton of potential and I look forward to seeing what he does next. It is my pleasure to introduce you to John Vento.

I’ve never been to Pittsburgh. What is the music scene like in Steel City?
It’s really strong especially with young original artist. It’s so cool to see young band focus on original music instead chasing money gigs with cover songs.

Tell me more about your relationship with Seven Fields Entertainment.
Actually, Seven Fields Entertainment has been dormant for a few years. We originally launched it to support a few local Pittsburgh bands but unfortunately things never really took off.

I am sure there are a lot of great music venues in Pittsburgh. What are some of your favorite places to see a show?
Wow… That’s a tough one because we’ve lost so many great venues in Pittsburgh over the last few years. But I would say that next to our historic theaters, Benedum Center for the Performing Arts, Heinz Hall, Byham Theater, my favorite local clubs are Moondogs Music Bar and Excuses Bar & Grill. Both small, but very committed to live music. I’m also involved with an acoustic listening room called Steamworks Creative, which is getting great reviews.

Tell me more about Love, Lust & Other Wreckage.
Well, it’s a “fictional” story of a middle aged man who struggles between his one true love (music) and his desire to have a meaningful partner in his life. (Laughs.) In summary, this guy screws up more than he succeeds when it comes to love but in the end he finds happiness. Amen.

There are 13 songs on that album. What are some of your favorites?
I love them all but since you are asking the question you deserve an answer. I like “Baby Blues,” “Rainbows & Lighting” and “Good Life Made.”

What can fans expect from a live performance?
A great band of talented players, authenticity, no backing tracks and emotion.

Tell me more about your experience working with Michael Stover and MTS Management Group.
Mike is a pro!!! He follows up on everything and has earned the trust and confidence of everyone he deals with.

How do you know Amy Hartman?
I know Amy through local connections in the arts plus we’ve done some songwriting together.

Who are some of your biggest influences?
Harry Chapin, Eric Burdon and the British Invasion.

You’ve been doing this for quite some time. How has your sound changed over the years and where do you see it going forward?
I think like most maturing musicians we mellow with age and become more efficient. Less notes, less words, less production often means more emotion and passion.

What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?
Probably the “Darkness Tour” with Bruce Springsteen in 1978 followed closely by CSNY comeback in the late 90s.

You have a really cool photo on Facebook of you standing on steps in front of an old church. Where is this and why did you pick there to pose for a photograph?
Thank you for the compliment, but my photographer Paulette Quinten deserves most of the credit. That photo was taken in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. At the time my new album working title was Follow Your Heart and we certainly had a more spiritual vibe in mind.

Vents Magazine shared a nice review of your new album. What are others saying about the new release? I can’t wait to hear it!
The reviews have been overwhelmingly supportive and positive. It’s been quite humbling on every level.

Tell me more about your show at The Oaks Theater with Jason Walker and Mary Lou Scherder.
Jason Walker is an incredible singer and entertainer, his energy is unreal plus he has a great band. Mary Lou is a very talented acoustic singer/songwriter. The Oaks Theater is an historic venue that is so cool.

What’s next for John Vento?
Finishing up some tracks that didn’t make the cut for the album plus the big project is getting ready for the upcoming stage play of same title, “Love, Lust & Other Wreckage.” Debuts at The Oaks Theater in September.

Thank you for doing this. In all of the interviews I do, I always give the artist the last word. Go.
Thank you so much for the interview, I really appreciate your support of my music. God bless you.
