Artist Interview: 1-on-1 with Luca Schreiner

Artist Interview: 1-on-1 with Luca Schreiner

When Luca Schreiner released “Over You,” I couldn’t stop listening to it. The song has a tropical vibe, the lyrics are are on point and the vocals are memorable. I did some more research and quickly learned Luca isn’t messing around. He’s only 23 years old, but has over 50 million streams on Spotify and has shared the stage with some big names like Don Diablo and Oliver Heldens. I was so impressed, I reached out to the team at Urban Rebel PR to schedule an interview. This was fun. It is my pleasure to introduce you to Luca Schreiner.

You just released “Over You.” Tell me more about that release.
“Over You” has been such a big project for me! I’ve worked on this track for more than 7 months until it finally got released. I basically had 5 completely different versions until my label Ultra Music and I were completely happy with it.

You’ve played alongside guys like Don Diablo and Oliver Heldens on live bills. Do you get nervous around those guys and what does it mean to have support from guys like that?
At first I felt super nervous to play alongside these guys, but in the end they’re also just normal human beings who follow the same passion for music as I do. For instance, I remember talking with Drew from The Chainsmokers for hours about music production in the backstage of a festival, which was so interesting and of course super cool, too!

Your remix of “Say You Won’t Let Go” has over 25 million streams on Spotify. That is bananas! When you released that, did you ever think it would be this successful?
I never thought it would be this successful. I remember the label reaching out to me asking to do a more dance pop kind of version of “Say You Won’t Let Go,” because they had trouble at first to get some radio play because the original version is slower and more of a ballad. When I sent in my remix all of the guys were super happy with the result and even KISS FM and BBC picked it up for playlist rotation which was huge! In the end the original track by James Arthur is one of the most streamed and most successful singles of the past few years and I feel super honored to be the only official remixer of this fantastic song!

When you produce a remix like that, do you need the original artist’s permission? When you release the remix, do you send it to the original artist?
I started my remixing career by just searching acapellas of successful songs on the internet and then producing my remix around it. Over the years labels and artists now reach out to me asking for a remix. In the end the artist of course has to give his permission before the remix gets out.

We spend a lot of time in Germany. Some of our best friends live in Berlin. What is the music scene like in Stuttgart, Germany?
Stuttgart is more of a hip hop city compared to other cities here in Germany. Lots of famous hip hop artists come from Stuttgart. That’s why this is also one the main genres which clubs play here. Even though lots of aspiring DJs and producers come from here.

Tell me more about your experience working with Ultra.
Ultra was the first big label that believed in me. I’m super proud to be part of their amazing artist roster. It’s incredible to see with whom they’ve already worked with in the past and still work with by now!

You don’t have any tour dates on your website. You planning something for 2019?
Definitely! There are already some dates confirmed which just haven’t been announced yet, so definitely keep an eye on my tour calendar as there are lots of new dates to be announced soon!

There are a lot of big dance music festivals out there. What are some of your favorite festivals?
I would love to visit Tomorrowland and Ultra Music Festival one day! I’ve only heard good stuff about these festivals and it would be absolute dream to be able to play there one day! Besides these two festivals we have the World Club Dome here in Germany which has always been a great experience not only because I played there couple of times but also because the line up and the whole organization is just fantastic!

There are a lot of big names on the DJ Mag Top 100. You aren’t on the list yet, but what does that list mean to you as a producer? Would being on that list help you get bigger/better gigs?
I know that the list is super important to a lot of promoters and festivals all around the world and it definitely helps you booking wise to get to play more shows but in the end it more or less just comes down to who as the most votes and not necessarily who has been more successful this year.

Las Vegas has become the epicenter for dance music in the United States. What are some of your favorite places to see a show in Sin City?
I’ve only been once to Las Vegas before when I was a little child, so I haven’t had that much experience in partying in Sin City yet. (Laughs.) I only heard that the OMNIA Nightclub is such a crazy big club and people go nuts there, so definitely would love to check out this club when I’m in Las Vegas.

When you aren’t working on a new single or remix, who do you like to listen to? Who are some of your biggest influences?
The Chainsmokers always have been a big inspiration for me! I just love their writing and all the emotions they bring into their tracks. Also love what the two Swedish guys called NOTD are doing lately! They just release smash after smash.

Tell me more about your relationship with BCB-Family.
BCB-Family is my booking agency, so they basically coordinate my bookings. Like Ultra Music they’ve been the first people believing in what I’m doing. They’ve always been super supportive and take a big part of the success of Luca Schreiner over the past few years.

What’s next for Luca Schreiner?
Ending of last year I just signed with a new management which I’m super excited to work with! I’ve literally locked myself in the studio over the past few months working on new original music and new remixes! The plan is to release lost of new original music in 2019, so be prepared for a year of music!

Thank you for doing this. In all of the interviews I do, I always give the artist the last word. Go.
Thank you so much for having me! Like I said there’s so much new music coming up and I can’t wait for you all to hear it!
