Foxtail Golf Club: How many steps?

Foxtail Golf Club: How many steps?

My friend Marc likes to play Foxtail Golf Club. Located in Rohnert Park, California, Foxtail GC features The North Course and The South Course. Marc had originally invited me to play in an event here on Sunday, September 8, but it was rescheduled. I came back from my trip to St. Louis a day early, so we decided to play 18 holes anyway. Treat this as a practice round for the big match that has been rescheduled for next month.a

I’d never played Foxtail GC before, but had heard good things, specifically about The North Course. We teed off at 1:30 pm and the wind was already starting to blow. I went left off the first tee, then hit my second shot in a fairway bunker. You could tell, specifically on the front 9, they are having issues with their fairway bunkers. Greenside bunkers seemed okay, but the fairway bunkers need some TLC. Before I teed off, their Golf Operations Manager said to treat them as ground under repair and drop if I found myself in one. I did… Several times during this round!

Marc, Chris, Russell and I played from the Blue tees. It was my first time playing with Chris. He’s a good player, and while he uses clubs that are “20 years old,” his words, not mine, he has a nice ball flight and can really plot his way around a golf course. He shot 77 if I remember correctly. The Blue tees measure 6,394, which was plenty of golf course with the wind. There were a couple of holes that I struggled to reach the green in two shots.

After 10 or 11 holes, Russell called it quits. He had to watch a football game, apparently. He did play pretty good on the front 9, though. His putting was on point and he was smoking his driver, like usual. Before we played golf, we met for lunch at Wing Man. I am a wing snob, and have been trying to find the best wings in the Bay Area. So far, Wing Man is the best I’ve found. The wings have a lot of flavor, only seasoned with salt and pepper, and they offer a wide variety of sauces. I’ll be back! They have a food truck, too. Need to try that out next.

Having not played this course before, and being able to walk, I figured I would count my steps/miles and write a blog post about it. I was watching a Gary Vaynerchuk video the other day, and he was focused on content creation. Russell and I were talking about that, and while he isn’t creating as much content as me, I enjoy the process and sharing my ideas with the world. I digress.

Overall, Foxtail GC is a good walk. I didn’t count my steps from the clubhouse to the first tee, which was quite the walk in itself. I started tracking on the first tee. The front 9 ended up being 8,294 steps/3.7 miles. It didn’t feel like it was that long. The back, which I enjoyed, ended up being 8,819 steps/3.48 miles for a total of 17,113 steps/7.18 miles.

I didn’t break 80, but had a few good looks at birdie. I hit 10 greens, but literally burned the edge on four or five putts for birdie. It was the “round that could have been.” We had a blast, and I can’t wait for another crack at it. Before our round I got the chance to meet Matt Anders, golf operations manager. We had been talking via email, so it was nice to put a face to a name. I’ve also been chatting with Christopher Gay, general manager, on Facebook. He was off on Sunday, but look forward to meeting him in the future.

Thanks again for the invite, Marc. Always enjoy time on the golf course with you. It was also nice playing with Chris and Russell. Hey, Russell, next time, think you could finish 18 holes? That’d be great!
