Turn on “Act of God,” turn it up, and enjoy this intimate conversation with Linney. Let’s go!!!
⁎✶☆ turning feelings into sounds ☆✶⁎
Palm Springs sunshine, good vibes, and a pool party—what more could you ask for? What do you think takes a daytime party from fun to epic, and how do you keep the energy flowing?
Honestly it’s all about the people and the energy they bring. A killer playlist, unexpected drops & a crowd that’s not afraid to get a little wild — that’s all you really need. Creating an environment that allows everyone to be themselves & dance like no one’s watching, that’s when it turns epic.
You picked a great time to be in Palm Springs! Did you get a chance to go to Coachella while you were here? The lineup was huge this year!
You know, it’s crazy, I’ve lived in LA for 10 years and I’ve never once been to Coachella. I know this is such an “artist” thing to say, but I’m really hoping my first time attending will be when I’m performing. Also to be honest, I’m also a little afraid of all the dust. So many people I know lost their voice after spending the weekend there. But YES – the lineup looks insane and for now, I will enjoy watching the sets live on YouTube for Couch-ella.
First off, congratulations on winning Breakout Female Vocalist at the EDM Awards. That is such a major achievement. Can you take us back to the moment you found out you had won? What was going through your mind, and who was the first person you reached out to or shared that moment with?
I honestly wasn’t even expecting to be nominated. I attended the awards in Miami last year and was thinking “hmm – that’d be so cool to be a part of that someday!” Earlier this year, I had an interview with EDM.com after being included in their Class of 2025 and they mentioned checking the nominations on Monday when it was announced. They were also the ones who broke the news that I had won. I think I cried & then told my manager, Jeff Schoeny. He’s been there since day one and we’ve built my project into what it is today.
Dim Mak Afloat: Desert Pool Party Edition has a killer lineup this year. What’s it like getting to share the stage with talents like Mild Minds, Party Pupils, and Mary Droppinz?
It’s been such an honor! Everytime I get to share a stage with such talented artists, I feel so grateful and lucky to be here. It takes me back to when I was younger making playlists and burning CDs for long car rides. I was curating music from such a young age but didn’t even know that was an actual job until I got older. It feels very full circle.
How did your collaboration with Vicetone on “Opposites” come together? I can’t get enough of this track. It has such a powerful blend of your vocals and their signature sound. What was the creative process like behind co-writing and performing this single?
Vicetone is great! My publisher put together a writing session with them November 2023 at the studios in Santa Monica – I remember this because it was my first time driving my car with my full leg brace on after my ACL surgery. I almost turned around because I was in so much pain. I had to keep my left leg straight and not bend it & I remember calling my manager about how nervous I was to do the drive – but I was determined. I’m so glad I fought through the uncertainty. The session was me, Lenii and Victor from Vicetone. Victor played us a bunch of songs they were working on and we immediately were drawn to the “Opposites” track. Everything fell into place after that like clockwork. Truly feels like magic when songs like that are born.
[From left to right: Lenii, Victor, and Linney on the day they wrote “Opposites.” All are holding their leg in solidarity with Linney, who was still in a leg brace.]
Can you tell me more about your single “Act of God” with Layton Giordani and Sarah de Warren? I think it’s amazing. The lyrics really stuck with me, and I’d love to hear more about how it came together.
Yea, this one has really taken off! It’s been incredible to see how far it’s traveled. The idea was inspired by my time at Ultra performing with Nicky Romero March 2024. We performed “Desire” on the mainstage right before torrential rainfall ensued. I was en route to watch my friend, Blanke, perform later that evening but the decks had flooded and they ended up shutting the festival down for the day. Backstage in the trailers, they were discussing the legal term “act of god” — and the phrase stuck with me.
A few weeks later, back in LA, I had a songwriting session scheduled with Sarah and I told her about my experience at Ultra and the phrase that had stayed with me. We had previously written a song for my project about my dad’s heart condition (“One More Day“) and we began discussing what else could be considered an “act of god”: our heartbeats, the magic of life, the pulse — the rhythm. Rhythm is an act of god. So we made it about the music. And built upon the idea of our bodies being the original musical instrument that orchestrates life and experiences.
Once we finished the demo, we sent it off to our publisher who shared it with Layton’s team. We had a version back from him fairly quickly. And then John and Dom started rinsing it live, the videos went viral — and the rest is history. Just recently, Billboard wrote about all 3 of us and it’s just entered the dance charts.
[I made a video about this if you wanna check it out here].
Did you have fun performing “Desire” with Nicky Romero and TELYKAST at Ultra Miami? Looked like an epic set!
Absolutely! This was such a special moment for me for so many reasons: 1) Our song had been #1 on SiriusXM BPM for 4 weeks and performing it live (at such an iconic event!) was a spectacular way to celebrate that. 2) It was my first performance post-ACL surgery (Oct 2023) — I was cleared to travel and perform and dance — but NO jumping. So I used my arms to emote and apparently looked like I was casting a spell. (Laughs.) In this video, you can see the staff helping me step up onto the stage – I use my right leg both times to avoid putting weight on my left 3) It was broadcast live on YouTube so my family around the world could tune in! 4) I know Avicii once performed on that stage and I had just toured the world with MaRLo performing our trance cover of his song “Wake Me Up.” I felt very blessed to be there.
Before we wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share—maybe something fans might not know yet? And what’s the rest of your summer looking like? Any big releases or surprises we should be watching for?
I’ve got lots of fun things on the horizon: a special announcement regarding something in Las Vegas in a couple weeks + opening for Laidback Luke and Steve Aoki at TAO Beach May 18th (tickets here) + upcoming dates in NYC, LA, & Houston. Lots of solo Linney records + exciting collabs I can’t announce yet. You can join the inner circle here & be first to hear the news ◡̈
Thanks for doing this. That was fun! In all of the interviews I do, I always give the artist the last word. Go.
You’re awesome! Thanks for spreading the love and sharing your joy of music with the world ♥
