Pliny for President is a double dry-hopped version of our flagship Pliny the Elder double IPA, including one or two new hop varieties.
Sheryl and I LOVE visiting breweries when we travel and especially on the weekends here in the Bay Area. Before we moved to Santa Rosa, we were planning to visit Russian River Brewing Company on a domestic beer trip. Now we can walk there!
When the west coast IPA craze started a few years ago, Pliny the Elder was THE staple for the style. High ABV, complex nose, drying finish as the hops danced across your palate. Then you have Pliny the Younger, a triple IPA that has a week dedicated to its release. They decided to kick things up a notch and DDH it!
The beer is called Pliny for President and it was released TODAY!!! So we went over, grabbed a can and brought it home. Of course we grabbed a bottle of Elder to compare notes. FYI, Pliny the Younger is a top 10 beer for me. So it really isn’t fair to compare it to this. (As I was writing this, my beer friend Ashley mentioned a Pliny for President t-shirt she bought in 2016. Guess I need to send her a can to match! Ashley, if I do, I expect a photo of you drinking the beer in said t-shirt. That’s the rule!)
The nose on this is insane. Almost fruity, like the juicy IPA craze sweeping the nation, but also dank and herbaceous. The mouthfeel is out of this world. Thick. Creamy. Hops dance on the sides and back of my palate with a LONG drying finish. Gets drier and drier with every swallow. This beer is simply amazing. Granted, it was canned TODAY! So that helps. Hard to beat a fresh IPA!
I don’t write a lot of longform beer reviews. Glad I could grab a few cans for some beer buddies back in Arizona. Thanks for reading, and regardless what is in your glass tonight, cheers! #DrinkLocal
