Artist Interview: 1-on-1 with Casmalia

Artist Interview: 1-on-1 with Casmalia

A few weeks ago Casmalia, a San Diego-based DJ, producer and live vocalist, released a new single titled “Is It A Dream” via Farris Wheel Recordings. I didn’t know anything about her, but LOVE the song. I didn’t know anything about Farris Wheel Recordings, either. I dug in and learned she’s caught the attention of names like David Guetta, AC Slater (no, not the character made famous by Mario Lopez on the hit TV show “Saved by the Bell”) and Diplo. To help promote her new single, I reached out for a short interview. I can’t wait to hear more from this up and comer. It is my pleasure to introduce you to Casmalia.

Your new single “Is It A Dream” is amazing! Well done!!! Tell me more about that release and your inspiration behind this song.
“Is It A Dream” was built around a vocal bit that I recorded years ago. I wasn’t sure what to do with it, so I started building a heavier track and realized it would fit in perfectly. I was so stoked when Gene Farris showed interest in the song, I’ve been wanting a Farris Wheel release for a long time!

When you sit down to write a new song, do the words just come to you or are you planning out the lyrics? I am curious how you go from a blank canvas to a song ready for distribution.
It looks different for every track depending on my mood and inspiration. Some mornings I will wake up with a fully formed track in my head, lyrics and all. Other times I won’t have a clue what I want to make, I put a kick down and start from there. However, I usually start with my vocals and build the track around them.

You have several other popular singles like “Favorite Song” and “Four Letter Word”. “Four Letter Word” has 180k streams. Are you planning to release an EP or an album soon? I’d love to hear more from you!
I’m going to be focusing more on singles in the upcoming months, but I do have plans for an album later on down the road. The biggest challenge is creating a body of work that large that keeps up with my current style and finding a label to share my vision. An EP is much closer on the horizon, however, I hope to release at least a couple of those this upcoming year!

“Is It A Dream” is out now on Farris Wheel Recordings. I don’t know much about that record label. How did you connect with them and how was your experience working with them?
Farris Wheel is Gene Farris’s label. I met Gene in 2019 when he played a show in San Diego with my good friend, GAWP. We stayed in touch over the years, and I’ve sent them songs from time to time but none of them fit the sound of the label. I was so excited when he told me how much he loved “Is It A Dream”, and I love how much attention the track has been getting.

You’ve played in some big clubs over the years. What can fans expect from a live performance and what is your favorite club to visit?
My live performances will always include new unreleased tracks with live vocals. I always test out my new tracks on the road so I can see what the fan favorites are. My favorite club will always be my home club, Spin Nightclub, in San Diego. That place is my home and the people who work there are like family to me.

What’s next for Casmalia? I am hoping for an EP or a full-length album! Maybe a tour?
I am gearing up to fly to San Francisco for the incredible Fresh Start on New Year’s Day, where I will be opening the main stage for Justin Martin, John Summit, and Wax Motif, alongside others. I’m also incredibly stoked to play on Groove Cruise Miami from January 19th through the 23rd. I’ll be hosting a wine tasting on board, so be sure to sign up to join if you’re going!

Thank you for doing this. This was a short interview, but when you release your next EP or LP, let’s reconnect! In all of the interviews I do, I always give the artist the last word. Go.
Thank you so much for chatting with me! I want my fans to know that they can look forward to a ton of new music this year in various styles, and that I’m going to be exploring different genres and collaborating with some fantastic artists. Stay tuned!
