Live artist Innellea will drop his debut album The Belonging on February 9, 2024. As always, his releases form part of a full storytelling art project created around chosen concepts. The album features diverse and significant collaborations with names like CamelPhat, leading grime exponent Flowdan, Swedish indie singer/songwriter Karin Park, live musician Juan Hansen a.m.m.

Previously releasing on revered labels like Afterlife and Diynamic, his tracks powering many a DJ’s set, the Munich live artist has self-released big-scale conceptual narrative projects inc. his lauded “Five Phases” Project. His melodic house/techno combined with diverse genres is now at home on Distorted Youth in collaboration with [PIAS] Électronique.

The Belonging project is a cohesive multimedia concept, comprising his 2024 album heralded by a series of singles, multiple music videos, creative use of social media and a live tour (inc. Paris, New York, Munich, London, Amsterdam, Cairo) all of which will evoke a “collective catharsis” for all who share it. The music and visuals chart a personal and universal journey to reconciliation and “belonging”, through hope, from alienation and violence, though each music release can be experienced as powerful listening in its own right.

As personal crises are part of life, we want to go through this journey collectively and include everyone around us who might be silent, burned out and struggling, as so many these days are asking ourselves,’Where do I belong?’ Together, we will go forward through all the insanity to reach where we truly belong.

Earlier singles now out include “Burning Out” with Juan Hansen, “Silence” featuring Maurice Kaar, and “Forward Forever” with Flowdan, supported by Pete Tong, Sarah Story, BBC 6 Music, Kiss FM, Mixmag, SLAM (NL).

Prior to the release of his latest masterpiece, The Belonging, I was unfamiliar with his work. However, from the moment I pressed play, I found myself utterly hooked. The opening track, “Where Do I Belong?”, immediately drew me into his world, setting the tone for an extraordinary musical journey.

Inella’s album is nothing short of fantastic; each lyric feels as though it emanates from the depths of his soul. What sets this album apart is not only its profound emotional resonance but also his collaboration with a myriad of up-and-coming artists, adding layers of richness and diversity to the experience.

Eager to unravel the mysteries behind his music, I reached out for an interview. What followed was an unforgettable conversation, an honor to spend time with this young visionary. As you begin reading, I encourage you to listen to The Belonging in its entirety, clocking in at 53 minutes and 15 seconds. Ladies and gentlemen, prepare to embark on a journey of discovery as we explore the enigmatic world of Inella.

A neologism; neither restrained nor bound by conventions.

You released “There’s Another Me” featuring Aparde. Tell me more about that single and your experience working with Aparde.
Collaborating with Aparde on “There’s Another Me” was a truly enriching experience. Aparde’s unique approach to music aligned seamlessly with the vision we had for the track. The synergy in our creative process allowed us to craft a piece that resonates with the theme of self-discovery and inner strength.

You are hitting the road soon. Tell me more about “The Belonging” Album Live Tour. Are you pumped for A State Of Trance in Rotterdam?
I’m incredibly excited about “The Belonging” Album Live Tour. Taking the album to the stage is a special experience, allowing me to connect with the audience in a dynamic way. The final conceptual stage of this album is the show itself, where we all belong in unity and where we’re able to forget all the negativity and the darkness that’s sometimes surrounding us out there.

I am looking forward to A State Of Trance as I’ll reach a new audience, but I won’t have my stage design there which definitely makes a difference to the show.

You are managed by MEIOSIS Records. Tell me more about your work with them and how they are helping you grow as an artist.
I am managed by Sanny at MEIOSIS, and the collaboration with him has been crucial in my artistic growth, providing support and guidance to navigate the ever-evolving music industry. We’re close friends and we’re always trying to see things from a different perspective to come up with our conceptual tours, that besides music brings a deep story-telling that people can identify with. It’s incredible to see how many people we’re reaching with the topics and we’re overwhelmed by the feedback we’re getting.

Your single “Forward Forever” is FIRE. Not really a question. I just love that song!!!
Thank you for the love! I’m thrilled that you enjoy the track.

You are based in Munich, Germany. I’m guessing you’ve been to Oktoberfest? Prost!
Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit! Living in Munich has indeed given me the opportunity to experience the vibrant and lively atmosphere of Oktoberfest. It’s a celebration like no other and I love sharing these moments with my best friends.

Tell me more about “The Belonging” multimedia project LP and your experience working with  [PIAS] Électronique.
It was an inspiring journey. The collaboration allowed me to explore different artistic dimensions and convey the album’s narrative through various mediums.

Last August you posted a video playing a new song to a happy crowd of fans. What goes through your head when you’re playing a new song to an unsuspecting crowd.
When I play a new song to an unsuspecting crowd, it’s a mix of excitement and anticipation. Witnessing the immediate reaction and connection with the audience is a special moment for sure and it’s the most honest feedback you can get.

What headphones are around your neck? I ask every DJ I interview this… Maybe I should compile a list!

What is your songwriting process? Do you sit down with a yellow pad and just write or do lyrics just come to you in your sleep?
My songwriting process is a dynamic journey. Inspiration comes from various sources, such as daily life, traveling etc. and the creative flow can be spontaneous or methodical, depending on the moment.

There are 15 songs on the album. Why 15 and do the songs stand alone, or do they tell a story from “Where Do I Belong?” through “There’s Another Me”?
The decision for 15 songs was a deliberate choice to create a comprehensive narrative, in a time where everything seems to be so fast paced and nobody has the time to listen to a full album with so many songs on it. Each song stands alone, yet together, they weave a cohesive story from “Where Do I Belong?” to “There’s Another Me.” From a state where you’re feeling deformed to a state where you realize, “We Belong In Here”.

The LP is out on Distorted Youth in collaboration with [PIAS] Électronique. Tell me more about that operation and your experience working with them and launching your own imprint.
Back in the days I had my own imprint that just had the same name as me as an artist. I felt that the time has come to grow and to build something new. It’s not the main launch yet as I haven’t really finished my vision yet, but it’s the first step. For now I will use it to release my music as easily as possible, but I’ll definitely open it up for other artists.

I love your sound, man. I’ve never collaborated with a DJ, but would love to. If you ever want to consider working together, LMK. It could be fun and I know we’d produce something magical!
Thanks man! Really appreciate it. Let’s do this for sure. I love experimenting, leaving comfort zones and crossing borders – so let’s go.

Speaking of collaborations, you worked with names like Flowdan, CamelPhat, Monolink on The Belonging. How does that come about and how long does it take to produce a single with someone else?
Collaborations often arise organically, driven by a mutual artistic appreciation. The creative process varies, for example I went to Berlin to visit Monolink and finish the song in his studio, Flowdan sent me his vocals after I sent him my instrumental, etc.

Who inspires you? And what are you listening to when not working on your next single?
My inspiration comes from diverse sources, and during downtime, I explore a wide range of music genres. It’s essential to stay open to new sounds and ideas.

What can fans expect from a live performance? I bet you could play for hours… Just the vibe would keep people dancing all night!
The final stage of the album culminates in the live tour. We created an immersive experience combining visuals, lights and music during the performance. The energy is infectious, and I aim to create a journey that keeps people dancing and connected throughout.

Thanks for doing this, man. That was fun! In all of the interviews I do I always give the artist the last word. Go.

“After all the darkness we go through, losing ourselves, not knowing where we belong or who we are, we eventually realize ‘There’s Another Me’. The light comes, revealing strength we never knew we had. Let’s journey together through the final stage of the collectively experienced catharsis.”
