Continuing celebrations of a milestone 30 years of Ovum Recordings, Josh Wink unveils new single “Progression,” taken from his forthcoming two-track EP of the same name arriving on Ovum 9th August.

A captivating ten minute odyssey, “Progression” takes us to cinematic deep space territory via a galaxy of immaculately produced bleeps, beats and rising synths. Expanding on the artist’s current push for “new areas of musical expression and creativity,” Wink paints an absorbingly expansive sonic landscape as the track builds steadily over its course. With an “Ambient Mix” on the flip, the EP calls to mind the lost art of the chill out room and lays testament to Wink and Ovum’s unrelenting ability to surprise and delight whether it’s conjuring peak time bangers or delivering more reflective moments. Josh Wink says:

I had so much fun writing this track. I started it in my studio with a certain direction in mind. I had a flight to San Francisco from Philly and I finished the basic outline of what became ‘Progression.’ I was sitting on the window seat and at 32,000 feet was mesmerized by the calm and serenity of the mammatus clouds which seemed to be on fire due to the setting of the sun. Intense variations of orange, pink and purples, like looking into hot embers of a campfire. I was moved and influenced by my serene visions and felt a deep tranquil state which influenced the floating, soaring and introspective nature of the song. I base a lot of my music on tension, and the track holds true to this anticipation of when things will change, evolve and PROGRESS during the advancement of the track, leading into a welcomed crescendo of rhythm and ethereal ardent melodies. I like to make statements in my compositions and I believe when listened to from start to finish, it will leave your body and mind satisfied, filled with gratitude and internal smiles.

Josh Wink has been gloriously disrupting electronic dance music with a DIY and post-punk energy since the 90s. Amongst a huge arsenal of profound releases – his seminal breakout hit “Higher State of Consciousness,” highlighted as one of Rolling Stone’s “Greatest Dance Songs of All Time” in 2022. In 1995 the single was unleashed on the world and was immediately embraced by everyone from Gilles Peterson to Carl Cox. The definitive track continues to be rediscovered and adored by every new wave of DJ, raver and electronic enthusiast since its original release 29 years ago. His Ovum imprint is a continuation of this boundary-pushing attitude, with more than 400 releases, over 130 associated artists and countless chart-topping tracks in its 30 years. Born in Josh’s native Philly in 1994, Ovum is as DIY and independently-minded now as it ever was, with label and founder having plenty up their sleeve to surprise and delight in 2024 and well and beyond.
