Perpetual Motion

Electronic duo Phantoms are set to release their club-forward EP Perpetual Motion on ODESZA’s Foreign Family Collective imprint on November 22nd, 2024, marking a bold return to the indie dance and electro sounds that first inspired their musical journey.

The EP opens with “Floating On,” a track that carries a distinct French influence, setting the tone for the collection. The EP’s title track “Perpetual Motion,” released in June, showcases a grittier, more aggressive sound that sparked this new creative direction for the duo. “After quite a long time away from releasing music after our last album This Can’t Be Everything, we wanted to try experimenting with some sounds that reminded us of the music that got us into electronic music in the first place – more synthy and electro-clash feeling,” shares Phantoms.

“Don’t Be Afraid” featuring Notelle, released in September, continues the club-forward trajectory while incorporating indie dance elements. The track’s message – “Don’t be afraid of where we’ll go” – captures a unique blend of hopefulness and melancholy. “Without You” featuring Mariah Colon adds a nostalgic touch that the duo describes as “a track I would send to a girl I had a crush on on a CD.”

The EP’s penultimate track “Non-Stop” pays homage to the blog house era, reminiscent of tracks they would play at house parties when first starting out. The collection closes with “Moonflower” featuring Varju of Slenderbodies, a departure from the EP’s club focus that began as an instrumental idea with indie synths and bass guitar. Varju’s contribution includes both vocals and a unique lead that sounds like a synth-saxophone combination, elevating the track into new territory.

Speaking on the EP, Phantoms share, “This EP marks an exciting turning point for us. After we finished our album This Can’t Be Everything, we wanted to make some more club leaning records for our DJ sets without any real plan to release them. It felt like an opportunity to go back to our roots in the indie dance/electro/blog house world that got us into music in the first place. We’re super proud of how it came out and just excited to play a lot of these tracks in a live setting.”

Composed of Kyle Kaplan and Vinnie Pergola, Phantoms have established themselves as a formidable force in electronic music. Since launching in 2016 with their Broken Halo EP, the duo has achieved remarkable success, including their self-titled debut album featuring the chart-topping “Just A Feeling” featuring Verite, which claimed the #1 spot on US Dance Radio for 4 consecutive weeks and broke SiriusXM/BPM’s Top 20 countdown record. Their 2019 Disconnect EP featured dance chart-topping single “Say It” and gained worldwide DJ support from Pete Tong, Diplo, Duke Dumont, Jai Wolf, and Martin Garrix. Following their 2022 album This Can’t Be Everything on Foreign Family Collective, the duo has continued to evolve their distinctive style that blurs the lines between house and indie-dance, incorporating unique synth and drum patterns that have become synonymous with their brand of alternative electronica.
