Out May 15 to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month and Brian Eno’s 77th birthday, acclaimed electronic act Lawrence Lui returns with an avant take on the iconic producer’s 1992 track “Fractal Zoom.” The cover was originally commissioned for a WFMU compilation, and sonically akin to late-era Scott Walker, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Hiroshi Yoshimura, Actress, Burial, Grouper and, of course, Eno himself.

“Fractal Zoom” is the first salvo from an upcoming album from Lui, exploring his more outre ambient roots. The cover art was designed by his 16 year old son, Liam Lui Martin, and inspired by the classic cover design work of Peter Saville (New Order, Joy Division, OMD, Factory Records, etc.)

One of the most eclectic electronic music artists working today, Lawrence Lui’s debut EP Retroism garnered 5 million streams and support in tastemaker outlets like Magnet Magazine, The Wire Magazine, WFMU, Indie Shuffle, EDM Tunes, Nexus Radio, Big Shot Magazine, This Song Slaps and more. A remix by Anjunadeep’s Beckwith was released in 2018, followed by an ambitious second EP The Genius Of Time which fused cosmic techno with Buddhist chanson and gonzo songcraft. Inspired by his personal experience of the pandemic, Lui recorded Isolation Loops, an EP of lo-fi ambient music. An album 8 Songs followed in 2023, along with a panoply of international remixes from Marko Nastic (Serbia), Julio Victoria (Colombia) and Facets (Brooklyn) and Sergej Snooze (Croatia).
