The souls of two sonically gifted talents collide as AVAION and MAGNUS come together on their new single “Where Did You Go” on Sony Music. “Where Did You Go” marks the duo’s debut collaboration and is the second instalment of AVAION’s highly anticipated EP in Autumn 2023 following his latest emotive single “Broken”.

Where Did You Go

German DJ, producer, songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist AVAION continues to attract stratospheric momentum, not least for his multiple platinum and gold-selling hit ‘Pieces” with over 115 million Spotify streams alone, but for his unrivalled lyrical connectivity and sensual beats that swirl organic and electronic tones. With a building repertoire of performances, AVAION is now translating his signature sound emotively through charged live DJ sets, which welcomes a summer schedule that includes performances at renowned club Bootshaus alongside Oliver Heldens, Nature One Festival, Open Beatz Festival, and more.

Collaborator and Scottish selector MAGNUS is a compelling songwriter, producer and vocalist. Following an almost parallel journey to AVAION, it was the 2021 single “Paralyzed” in cohesion with yuma. and Jewels that elevated MAGNUS’ name to a must-know basis standing at over 12.6 million Spotify streams.

Like two kindred spirits AVAION and MAGNUS seamlessly intertwine musical identities on “Where Did You Go”. The track is clouded with symphonic synth loops and lyrical rhetoric propositions that mirror a confused inner dialogue, immersing the listener in deeply subdued electronic notes. Amongst the emotional dissonance are the familiar vocal harmonies of AVAION and a steady drum rhythm that soothes the angst in the search for amity. Radiant breaks interject emblazoned with jarring electro keys that cut through the tension and transport you to the low-lit corners of an underground club.

“Where Did You Go” is out now on Sony Music.

“AVAION’s dance music palette takes in everything from ambient, dubstep, drum & bass, and electronica, forming an idiosyncratic sound that soothes and invigorates listeners in equal measure.” Wonderland Magazine

When I first heard this single, I was hooked. I wasn’t familiar with AVAION or MAGNUS, but I love the vibe. I can turn it on, get lost in my spreadsheets, and lose track of time. I bet I’ve listened to this single 10 times now. But he has other bangers like “Pieces” and “Keep On Dancing” that are collecting Spotify streams. Heck, “Pieces” is approaching 120 million.

I was eager to learn more about him, so I reached out for an interview. Within a few days we were on the horn rapping about this single, his relationship with MAGNUS, and his motivation for songs that just feel good. I am eager to share this conversation with you. It is my pleasure to introduce you to AVAION. Keep your eyes on this kid… He’s going places!

LOVE your new single “Where Did You Go” with MAGNUS. Tell me more about that release.
I’ve always been a big fan of the vocals from MAGNUS. We met in a studio session in Berlin two years ago and decided that we should do something together because we thought the vibe of our voices would match perfectly on a song together. So, we kept in contact and started working on “Where Did You Go”. I’m really proud of this song because I think the vibe that we created is pretty spot on.

How did you meet MAGNUS and how long did it take to put that single together?
We met two years ago in Berlin and since then we were working on that song idea. It took a long time because we both had so much other things going on but I’m super happy that we finally finished it!

Where did the name AVAION come from? And why in ALL CAPS?
I was a big fan of fantasy movies when I was a kid and all the characters that I liked had super fancy mysterious names. So, I decided to come up with my own fantasy name and since then AVAION became my nickname.

“Where Did You Go” is out now on Sony Music. That’s a big label. Tell me about your experience working with them and why that label over another? Do you pick or do they come to you?
I have a great relationship with my label. We think the same and we have the same visions, so nobody makes decisions that the other one doesn’t like. They let me be creative and free with my musical choices and that’s something I really appreciate.

We have good friends in Berlin. Where are you from and have you been to Berghain?
I’m actually not from Berlin. I work there a lot and usually spend most of the time there but I’m originally from Bavaria (Nürnberg). It’s a small city in south Germany and I love it here. There’s so much nature, beautiful lakes, and mountains.

And yes, I have been to Berghain and it was a crazy experience to say the least! (Laughs.)

I love the single cover. What’s the meaning behind that image?
The room right next to my studio room is the office of two friends of mine. They are both extremely good graphic designers, and they do all my visual stuff like covers or even stage visuals for my shows. Every time I need some artwork, I just go next door and sit down with them to brainstorm ideas and this one turned out really nice. We tried to catch the melancholic dark vibe of the song that’s why the hand in the cover is reaching for light while trapped in the dark.

It seems like every DJ has a podcast. Any plans on producing your own show?
I want to start a lot more projects yes. A podcast would be a great idea, but time is always hard to manage. I produce, write and sing on my songs and that eats up a lot of time but I’m going to start being active in a lot more ways.

What headphones are around your neck?
I use the Audio-Technica ATH-M50. They are in my opinion the best headphones with the best price.

The music video for “Where Did You Go” is great. Who produced that for you and where did you film it?
Since day one my music videos are made by the same guys. They are called Off The Project and their logo is always in the beginning of my music videos. They are good friends of mine and also grown a lot over the years. It’s the best feeling to have a good team around you that stayed with you since day one.

What is Apple Music’s UP NEXT campaign and how are you involved in that program?
It’s a program where they select a new upcoming artist and support them on their socials and playlists. It’s a push for the artist and also a chance for new doors to open. I was selected for the campaign, and it certainly helped me to grow and reach new audiences.

You are working on an EP. How many songs and when can we expect to see/hear that release? I’m ready!
YES! It’s going to be six songs and I’m so excited to present them. We plan to release the EP around July/August time so keep watching this space.

Your hit single “Pieces” has over 119 million Spotify streams. That is amazing! Tell me more about that single and do you expect other releases to hit that threshold?
I’m super happy and proud about the great success of “Pieces” and I hope a lot more of my songs will get to this level. “Pieces” changed my life in a good way, and I will forever be thankful to all the people that are part of its success.

Who wrote the lyrics for “Where Did You Go”?
MAGNUS and I, and two songwriter friends of mine called Evan Klar and Hailey Leane Collier.

Any big plans this summer? Hoping for some tour dates here in Southern California. I hear LA is nice this time of year!
Yes, I plan to do a lot of international shows, but I want to start step by step because I want focus on my mental health and not over rush anything. I’m not used to travelling a lot and such far distances, so this is something I want to get used to.

What’s next for AVAION?
A lot of shows and a lot of new music. Dropping the EP this year will be a big one and there’s also going to be new merch coming out alongside the EP release.

Thanks for doing this, man. In all the interviews I do, I always give the artist the last word. Go.
Thank you! Much love for the opportunity! Can’t wait to show the world the new music that I’m working on.
