Above & Beyond has achieved an RIAA-certified Gold record – a first for the UK-based electronic music trio, and a first for their family of Anjuna label imprints.
The Gold record track, “Don’t Leave”, is an ambient, piano-based composition, coming from their 2019 yoga and meditation album Flow State, which has garnered 360 million album streams since its release.
The record is a departure from the energetic, dance-floor-ready club records that the trance trio had previously been known for, with their high-energy trance and progressive album Common Ground reaching #3 on the Billboard charts in 2018 and earning them a GRAMMY nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Recording.
Flow State is the culmination of a journey that began at Burning Man in 2014. A chance encounter on the Playa led to a spontaneous sunset yoga set on the infamous Robot Heart stage, guided by renowned yogi Elena Brower. A magical and spiritual experience for those present, it inspired Above & Beyond to begin opening their biggest global gigs with yoga sets, creating transformative experiences for 25,000-strong crowds at The Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington and Huntington Beach, California. One year later, the band released a follow-up album Flow State Meditations, which features spoken meditations by Elena Brower and three other inspiring women from around the world – on top of the 17 original album compositions.
These quieter moments have always held a special place in the hearts of Above & Beyond and their wider label fan base, which lead the trio to launch their third label imprint: Reflections. Bowing in 2022, Reflections serves as Anjuna’s new home for ambient, chillout, and downtempo music. The label kicked off with two original piano compositions by Above & Beyond: “Time Heals” and “Morning In Deira”.
“Our music has always been about getting in touch with, understanding, and accepting our emotions. After those amazing yoga sets, we realized that there is a bigger place for this more reflective music within our little universe,” explains Above & Beyond’s Paavo Siljamäki.
“With the Flow State project, we want to help bring people’s attention and focus towards helping themselves find better mental fitness and overall happiness in life,” adds Siljamäki. “Through raised awareness, being more present, one can reach a state of flow: a creative and free state of mind where time, fear, and stress dissipate,” Siljamäki says.
The Gold record achievement was bolstered by the success of Flow State on Amazon Music, where ambient yoga and meditation music has been championed in recent years. Since its release, Amazon Music customers have accounted for the majority of all streams of “Don’t Leave” in the U.S. according to Luminate.
Known as pioneers of the dance music scene, Above & Beyond, and Anjunabeats have now achieved notable acclaim and success in a completely new genre, bolstered by advocacy for yoga and meditation music from Amazon Music and their support for independent labels.
“Our wellness and meditation customers are incredibly discerning; if a song isn’t resonating with them, we see that quickly. Above & Beyond put the same care into their work in the wellness space that they do for the dance floor, and it’s that attention that has led to the staying power of ‘Don’t Leave’ on Amazon Music,” said John Farrey, Dance & Electronic Lead for Amazon Music.
On Wednesday, July 5, Above & Beyond and Amazon Music held a rooftop yoga session at sunset to celebrate the RIAA Gold Certification of Above & Beyond Flow State single “Don’t Leave”. The event featured music and yoga presented by Above & Beyond’s Paavo Siljamäki and Elena Brower; in addition to a Q&A between Paavo, Elena, and John Farrey.
