When we confirmed our plans to visit Morro Bay, I reached out to Janelle Meyer, CMP – Marketing & Communications Manager, San Luis Obispo Country Club. When I travel, I always like to visit other clubs to network and to learn more about operations. Since living in California, I’ve had the chance to visit dozens of clubs, and always look forward to my next visit. Janelle responded in a timely manner and invited Russell and I over for a tour, lunch and 18 holes of golf. After look at the club website, I couldn’t wait to visit! Janelle also looped in David Stocke, CCM, General Manager.
When we arrived, I wasn’t sure where to go, but we ended up finding the golf shop. Everyone on property was so nice and Janelle quickly came out to meet us. David, too. We started with a tour of the property. David did a great job showing us around and we got to see the locker rooms, the pool, the bocce ball courts and their dining rooms. It sounds like they have some big plans to enhance that experience soon. We also got the chance to see their athletic center, which is small, but well organized and offered great views of the golf course. After the tour we grabbed a table outside for lunch. I can’t remember our server’s name, but he was perfect. He was well spoken, was prompt, and provided us an unforgettable dining experience. Janelle, thank you for recommending the nachos and the fish tacos! I’m still full.
After that we hit the range to warm up before teeing off. I had just walked Morro Bay Golf Course, so I figured I’d walk here, too. You can read more about that experience here. I even convinced Russell to walk with me. The golf course was so much fun. The layout was challenging and the greens were slick. I didn’t play great on the front, but was able to turn it on the back. Russell did manage to make an epic par on the finishing hole. I made bogey… I don’t want to talk about it. Ended up shooting 80 at Morro Bay GC and 80 here at SLOCC. At least I’m consistent!
The front 9 ended up being 6,782 steps/3.03 miles. The back didn’t seem like it was a longer walk, but it was. The back was 7,235 steps/3.23 miles. It was a little windy when we teed off, but the weather was perfect and we really enjoyed the experience. Didn’t get the chance to see Janelle or David before we left, but I sent them a handwritten note to thank them for the opportunity.
Below you can see a few photos from our visit. If you are in the area, reach out to Janelle for a tour. She was great and while she wears many hats here, she will take the time to show you around. It also sounds like they have a good relationship with Cal Poly. Not sure to what extent, but would love to learn more.
Thanks again, Janelle. That was a fun day and I look forward to our next discussion.
Oh, and get this… In San Luis Obispo, restaurant drive-thrus are banned. I didn’t look into why, but when Russell told me, I called his bluff. Nope. He was right. Crazy!
