What to Pack for International Travel: 11 Travel Essentials You Shouldn’t Forget

If you’re heading to a new country, there’s probably a ton of things you need to do before you hop on a plane. But before you get excited about your new adventures, don’t forget that it’s super-important to pack a few key essentials. Check out this list of what to pack for international travel so you won’t get stuck in a different place without the most important things you need.

1. Toiletries
It kind of goes without saying, but make sure you bring toiletries like a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, and conditioner. Remember TSA rules and be sure that all of your toiletries fall within the guidelines in terms of size if you’re going to carry them on.

2. Passport
If you really need to know what to pack for international travel, this is by far the most important thing! Be sure to include it in your carry-on or purse and keep it stowed away with your wallet and smartphone so it’s always nearby.

3. What to Pack for International Travel: A Good Hat
If you’re heading somewhere sunny, a great wide-brimmed hat will become your best friend. Choose hats that are labeled as “packable,” as these types of hats fold down for easy packing in your luggage.

4. Insurance
Even if you have health insurance in the states, travelers insurance is highly recommended. This will cover expenses you might incur overseas in case you become ill or injured.

5. Glasses and Sunglasses
If you wear prescription glasses, you should pack an extra pair just in case your regular ones fall off while you’re leaning over the balcony of your high-rise hotel. And of course, you can’t forget sunglasses, either, since you’ll definitely need them.

6. Translation Book or App
Depending on where you go, it’s likely you won’t understand the native language. Practice your language a bit before you leave, and bring a small translation book or download an app so you can communicate more easily with the natives.

7. Medicine
For those who take prescription medication, make sure you include this with your toiletries bag or in a carry-on. If your trip will be long, ask your doctor before you leave if they can give you an extra prescription so you’ll be covered while you’re away.

8. Plug Adapter
Many Americans tend to forget that the electrical plugs in other countries are different. Make sure you bring a universal plug adapter so you’ll always be able to recharge your phone or use your laptop.

9. Earplugs and Eye Mask
Aside from the plane trip, it can get quite noisy in some international cities. Pack these two items to help you get restful shuteye when you’re away from home.

10. Credit Cards
Yes, you should pack a credit card, but only bring one or two that you plan to use. You can browse this page to learn more about getting a loan if you’d rather have cash on hand for the trip.

11. Extra Socks
You’re probably going to do a lot of walking, so bring several extra pairs of socks. Look for breathable socks that dry quickly so you can change them frequently.
